Abstract
The disappearance rate (K-value) of radioactive colloidal gold (Au^(198) from the hepatic cirulation was estimated in 102 cases, of whom: 81 cases were with various liver diseases confirmed by the routine liver function tests, biopsies, X-rays and other clinical findings, 1 case was with situs inversus, and 20 cases were normal controls, In addition to these, 10 cases of portal hypertension were selected to evalute the changes of K values before and after the systemic shunt operation. Liver scanning was also carried out in all of these cases.
Following were the results:
1. The mean of K value in 20 normal controls was 0.1431¡¾0.0216, which is similar to those appeared in the literatures.
2. Twenty five cases of liver cirrhosis showed the mean of 0.0771¡¾0.0157 that is, a statistically the most significant difference from the normal controls (P<0.001).
3. Fifteen cases of liver cancer showed the mean of 0.1136¡¾0.0321, that is a statistically very significant difference from the normal controls (0.01>P>0.001).
4. Thirteen cases of portal hypertention showed the mean of 0.0894¡¾0.0230, of these, 10 cases were subjected ot the systemic shunt operation and their mean K values were: 0.0912¡¾0.0924 preoperatively and 0.1219¡¾0.028 postoperatively. Thus and increase of K value was obsered after the operation, which also tended to be paralled to the improvement of the liver function states.
5. The organ uptakes of Au^(198) appeared to be influenced by the function states of the liver and spleen.
6. The scanning findings of the liver cirrhosis patients revealed no specific changes except for the severe cases with or without bypersplenism in which the characteristic scan pictures were obtained.
7. In cases with space occupying lesions like hepatoma or liver abscesses, the well defined "cold areas" were noted, which would be very useful for the detection of such lesions.
